What’s a VPN?

Let’s start with the basics. What is a VPN? VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, and it allows you to connect to a server in a different location. Your computer already is connected to a server, and having access to a VPN will let you change the server you are connected to, and choose a different one. The reasons behind doing this are limitless. You might do it for safety, for instance, if you are at a coffeeshop or any other place that offers free WiFi. Maybe you are in a location where you cannot access your favorite applications that are for use solely in your home country. With a VPN, you can connect to a specific server in a specific country, so this will be a problem no more!

VPN account? VPN server?

Now that we have covered the basics about what a VPN is, let’s talk about how to setup a VPN router. It really is as simple as it sounds. We recommend using HideMyAss Pro. It is super easy to use, it’s not that expensive, and they offer great customer support. What else can you ask for, right? Now, let’s learn how to setup a VPN router works. Once you have the router configuration, you will be able to enjoy your applications and have a safe feeling when jumping online.

Do I really need a VPN router?

Let’s talk about VPN routers and router setup. The first thing you have to do is get a VPN router (no kidding, right?). There are plenty of fabulous routers to choose from, so whatever your budget is, you will be able to find one that suits you perfectly. Here are a couple of our favorites:

These routers are compatible with HideMyAss’s servers, so we basically did the heavy work for you. If you decide to use a different router, make sure it is compatible with HideMyAss, otherwise it will not work! The routers that we mentioned are also DD-WRT compatible, which you will need in order to setup a VPN connection.

I have the router and the account, now what?

Now that you have your VPN account through HideMyAss, and your fantastic VPN router, you will need to link them together. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Click Setup
  • Select PPTP Link Type
  • Utilize DHCP > Yes.
  • Type in the IP address for the server you choose
  • Type in your HideMyAss username and password for the PPTP.
  • Make sure the connection has PPTP encryption
  • Make sure the Deactivate Packet Reordering option is enabled
  • Once you reach Additional PPTP, type in MPPE required
  • Disable any STP
  • Leave the rest of the boxes in the disabled state
  • Save and Apply

Now you have successfully linked your VPN account with your VPN server, and you are ready to roll! Choose the server you want to connect to, and then go online like you normally would!

NoteKeep in mind that servers vary in speed, so you might need to change them from time to time. This is considered normal, so don’t panic if your connection is super slow. Just check the server you are connected to, and see if there is a faster one.

Have fun!
