Apple TV got even better when it added Hulu Plus to its streaming video line-up back in July 2012. Hulu, like Netflix, offers streaming television show and movies for a fraction of the cost of cable/satellite subscriptions, and the app is almost universal now a day. If you have an android or apple device, can download the app and watch streaming content anytime. For streaming devices like Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire, the Hulu Plus now comes standard if you live in the United States.
If you reside outside the US, however, you have likely gotten the dreaded message, “Sorry, currently our video library can only be watched from within the United States” on your Apple TV when trying to stream a video from Hulu Plus. Well, there is a simple remedy for that. Follow these steps, and soon you’ll have Hulu Plus on Apple TV outside US.
Here’s what you will need and what to do with it:
An Apple TV box
This goes along with having a US iTunes account as well.
A Virtual Credit Card, pay pal account and/or US credit card
Hulu Plus accepts any of these as payment for the service. Make sure that whichever payment method you choose is US based. You can use Google maps to find a US address making sure that you use a valid US postal code ( a five number code that matches a city and state.)
A VPN or DNS provider
Using a VPN or DNS is the only way you will be able to access Hulu Plus on Apple TV outside US. Once you have established the iTunes and Hulu Plus account using your US payment method, you will need to set up either a VPN or DNS account. The difference between the two is a VPN service may require an additional purchase of a router that accepts VPN connections.
The VPN connection will only be a good as the bandwidth it uses, so you may not get the quality of a straight internet streaming experience. And purchasing a router can be expensive. If you have no other choice and must use VPN, then be sure to find a VPN provider that has a vast array of server locations to choose from, preferably US servers.
When you set up everything, your IP address must be located in the US or Hulu Plus will not work. A good VPN service to use is Hidemyass or ExpressVPN. Either one of these is affordable and has a multitude of US IP addresses to choose from. They are also two of the fastest VPN services available. If you would rather go the route of DNS, then Smart DNS or Unotelly is the best way to go. The good thing about DNS service is no router is required setup is simple, and the speed is comparable to a direct internet connection.
An iTunes and Hulu Plus account
Once everything is set up; you have either a Pay Pal, Credit Card or Virtual Credit Card account established with a US address attached to it, a DNS or VPN provider is created with a US IP address, you will also need to have an account with both iTunes and Hulu Plus. The key to this whole situation is the US postal address.
iTunes and Hulu Plus will not work if you put in your actual address that is outside the US. Use the address you used when establishing your payment method as most of these apps require that the name and address match that of the name and address of the payment plan billing.
Now that is secured, you should be able to launch Hulu Plus on your Apple TV device from anywhere outside the US. Remember the US postal address and the US IP address are the only ways to gain access to Hulu Plus on your Apple TV outside the US.
Note: If you already have all of this and you are traveling or living outside the US, then all you need is the IP address. With a few tricks, a little bit of money and an afternoon, you can get the best streaming videos and television shows the US has to offer on Hulu Plus on Apple TV outside US.
